This picture has nothing to do with anything, I just really love this meme. BUT! There's a lot to talk about, so let's get started.
--This is Alex from the future. I've just finished writing this blog post and I think it's one of the better ones I've written. It's kind of interesting, I guess. So you should read it. Future Alex out.

The big SoundCloud update happened. And by that I mean I've changed the picture I've always had forever and ever from this to this.
"It's like seeing a cartoon being adapted into a live action film!!!" "There's no more derp!!!" "Now in more color than before but not really that much color!!!" "My name is on the picture now!!!"
I drew the picture on the left in Illustrator many moons ago and photoshopped some derpy goggles on because I loved anything steampunk at the time. I decided to use that picture as the profile picture for my SoundCloud page and decided if I started performing live I would have a costume similar to the picture. My hair would be temporarily dyed white, my face would be painted white, I'd wear goggles and a bow tie and a white bandanna that hid my face and had the mustache on it, like the picture. People talked me out of that weird idea but I still wanted a costume. Over time things became darker; I was wearing a black bandanna now and my hair would stay brown/be darkened a bit. I developed a full costume and as soon as it was complete I took the picture on the right. My dad is a hobbyist photographer and we spent about an hour creating the picture. I had to stand still the whole time with the bandanna tucked into my shirt, restricting my breathing, so that my dad could get the lighting right and make sure the light wasn't reflecting in my goggles. My breath also went up into the goggles and fogged them up, making it near-impossible to see. It was certainly one of the more uncomfortable things I've done recently. Anyway, you can faintly see an early concept of the costume in a video I did performing an older song.
"Alex, that's supa dark. How do you expect us to see anything?"
Shut up. You'll see the full costume in high definition soon *wink wink*. I don't actually have anything planned in terms of revealing the full costume in detail yet, but rest assured it will happen as Squdlum becomes less of an interesting hobby and more of another full-on artistic pursuit. I've been looking into playing live a lot, and the amount of material I have is slowly growing, so that might happen. One of the things I need to start performing live in my hometown/surrounding area is other electronic musicians. I'm not aware of any EDM scene in Riverside, however. I have talked to a couple people who do electronic music and my network of musicians is getting bigger, but it's still scarce. If you're an electronic musician from the Inland Empire, you should comment down below or fill out the contact form, which can be found in the "Contact" tab up above on the right side of the webpage. I'd like to do business with you.
Right now I'm focusing on remixes, but I have a single coming soon in the middle of all that. All that needs to be done for it is mixing and mastering (which can be in itself a lengthy process). In the meantime, my first true remix is below (there's a free download button right under the SoundCloud logo if you like it).

"That thing is ten minutes long, no way in hell will I listen to it."
Shut up and skip to 6:30. That's where you get the full range of the song for only half the time.
I feel like I'm definitely getting better as a producer. I understand my work isn't as top-notch quality as I'd like, but I feel I've shown massive improvement in such a complicated field of expertise after only almost two years starting from knowing absolutely nothing about music. September 2012 was when I started and in August 2012 I didn't know what a chord was. I feel like I'm learning so much so fast that if I step away from a project for a couple weeks, when I come back it's already terrible to me.

To the right is the first song I ever made, as a bit of a comparison (it's terrible). I guess you can expect a lot more from me regarding Squdlum. There's certainly a lot I want to do. One last note: I checked the website stats and saw that people are actually clicking onto the website around Thursdays. I don't know if you're actually reading the blog, but thank you, and I'm sorry I missed last Thursday. I thought no one was paying attention, lol. Anyway, yeah, thanks for reading and I'll see ya next Thursday! | |
